The 27-year-old was part of a breakaway group that put some distance between themselves and the peloton early on and he made his bid for glory with just over 40kilometres to go.

He also seized the mountains classification jersey.

Lampre-ISD’s Adriano Malori takes over the pink jersey from Garmin-Barracuda’s Ramunas Navardauskas as overall race leader. The former finished second in the stage, just edging out Michal Golas (Omega Pharma-QuickStep).

Today’s stage is another 200+ kilometre trek from Recanati - Rocca di Cambio, featuring two categorized climbs.
