Irish duo sail into lead

Ireland’s Peter O’Leary and David Burrows moved into the overall lead of the Star class at the Bacardi Cup in Miami yesterday after they took their second race victory of the week at the Grade 2 event on Biscayne Bay.

The series has been disrupted by poor weather but is expected to be completed this weekend and a podium result for the Cork/Dublin duo would be a boost to their Olympic campaign as they are trialling an innovative boat design.

Meanwhile, off the North Island of New Zealand, the fourth leg in the Volvo Ocean Race is expected to be decided today as Franck Cammas and the crew of Groupama 4 including Kerryman Damian Foxall head for the Auckland finish in first place.

Regardless of the final placings, overall leader Telefonica will retain its first overall placing. In the worst case, their overall lead could slip to just five points while Groupama could move into second or at worst, retain third overall behind Camper.
