Murphy insists development keeps UCC top of class

UCC president Dr Michael Murphy claimed the facilities at the Mardyke Sports Grounds were among the best in the world.

The €1.4 million pavilion at the venue, which will play host to this weekend’s Fitzgibbon Cup, was officially opened by sports minister Leo Varadkar yesterday.

“The redevelopment of the Mardyke pavilion, along with other capital projects under way this year, ensures the Mardyke complex represents truly world-class sporting facilities and continues to enhance the positioning and reputation of UCC as a leading university for sport both in Ireland and internationally,” said Dr Murphy.

The development includes changing rooms, a referees’ room, physiotherapy and first aid suites and facilities for the disabled. A new bar and lounge provides a function room for up 200 people with kitchen facilities and a balcony overlooking the pitches.
