Irish eventing was last night on course to have a team at the Olympics, after riders rose to the challenge in the Goresbridge Go For Gold International Horse Trials at Ballindenisk, Co Cork.

Much depended on results at a similar event in Italy, but after this had finished, Horse Sport Ireland was confident Ballindenisk CIC three-star winner Camilla Speirs and Mark Kyle had done enough to secure Olympic places for Ireland, with Bandon-based Michael Ryan also in the hunt.

His inclusion in the top 13 on the Olympic ranking leaderboard to gain a place in London depended on an event in Russia and the performance of Belarussian Aliaksandr Faminou.
