Demons gain some revenge for cup loss

UCC Demons had to withstand a tremendous late comeback from UL Eagles before eventually sealing the points in the Nivea for Men’s SuperLeague clash at the Mardyke Arena last night and in the process, gained some measure of revenge for their recent cup final loss to the same opposition.

Demons looked comfortable when taking a 17 points lead entering the final period but the Eagles soared and almost snatched victory.

In the opening minutes Demons were sloppy as the Limerick side punished them at will with the home team all at sea in defence.

Robert Taylor showed some nice touches and he increased the UL lead to nine points after seven minutes.

But Demons found another gear and inspired by Shawn Atupem, they levelled within two minutes.

UL took a 23-20 lead into the second period but in the closing minutes they lost Taylor when he was punished with his third foul and Demons looked in command at the interval when they led 47-37.

The home side continued to dominate as they played some impressive basketball that stunned their opponents.

Leading 71-54 the game looked over but UL had other ideas and despite losing Taylor they cut the deficit to 78-76 with four minutes remaining.

But Demons responded with a late Shane Coughlan interception guaranteeing them a hard earned win.
