DCU line up for NY medley

DCU make history when they line up for the Distance Medley Relay at the Millrose Games in New York on Saturday night.

Coach Enda Fitzpatrick must do without talented pair Paul Robinson and Darren McBrearty but has named an impressive quartet for the weekend.

Fitzpatrick send out Joe Warne (Doheny AC) to lead off in the 1,000 leg; Brian Gregan, the fastest Irishman over 400m last year, is in the 400m leg; Irish indoor 800m champion Mark English, runs the 800m and John Coghlan, whose father, Eamonn, won more Wannamaker Miles in New York than anyone else, takes the anchor leg.

Fitzpatrick takes pride in the achievements of graduates like Fionnuala Britton, newly-crowned European cross-country champion, and Linda Byrne who has qualified for the London Olympic marathon. He admitted: “We have given the athletes a base at DCU. All the sports structures are in place. I would strongly recommend kids stay at home and get a degree from an Irish university.”
