Furious bastketball chief O’Byrne blasts RTÉ’s ‘token’ coverage
In his programme notes for the National Cup semi-finals, O’Byrne wrote: “I must note that the national broadcaster will only render token coverage to this great weekend of Irish sport, including the iconic clash of Neptune and Blue Demons, and our finals in two weeks’ time. You may have your own idea how to describe this decision — disgraceful, short-sighted, discriminatory and insulting are phrases that have been suggested to me. I’d find it hard to disagree with any of those observations. I urge you to consider how we can render our displeasure towards the non-entities in RTÉ Authority who gave the general instruction down the line and to RTÉ Sport who in the normal code of conduct we have come to expect decided to victimise weaker sports rather than annoy more powerful sporting bodies.”
