Barrack Bimbo serves notice
She showed real class and stamina over the two days in Abbeyfeale bytaking the Corn Na Féile puppy event from her male opponents.
Having collected her Oaks permit at Loughrea in late October, she wil certainly be on many “short lists” to collect the classic in Clonmel. Freely available at 12/1 in the long-oddsbetting on Wednesday morning, she led by five lengths against the Ennis/ Clarecastle qualifier Awe and Wonder.
Next time up field she was two lengths better than Misty Herris who qualified at Ballyduff last month. A rank outsider at 4/1 when paired with overnight favourite 1/2 Blueview Sam (The Westmeath United qualifier) she led from slips and even though Blueview Sam made his bid for glory from halfway, Bimbo never yielded to advance to the final.
Her final opponent was the Jackie and Kathleen Murphy-owned (Mallow) Carrowkeal Benji whoqualified at Mitchelstown, with the long-odds layers making Benji the 4/5 favourite and Bimbo still the outsider at 4/6.
From the break, the Tournafulla bitch bombed away and made all the running to have over a length to spare when the hare was shifted.
Killimor Matey, trained in Athenry, Co Galway by Gerry Holian, finally got just reward after a busy season when taking the All-Age event on his fifth attempt to win silver. The Michael Ryan-owned black dogstarted the 2/1 favourite and showed his old form on the testing stretch where runners needed “gears” to climb the hill.
His final opponent was the Brendan Matthews-owned and trained Newry Legend. It was one-way traffic for the Athenry-trained dog as he made all the running to win by four at the turn.
Yorkville Stella, owned in Ballylongford, Co Kerry by Pat McCarthy, who reached the final of the Oaks qualifier at Castleisland in October, got her ticket to Clonmel yesterday by coming from behind to beat the long-odds favourite Bambas Minnie in a great final.
Charleville, Co Cork executive ICC member Tom Mulcahy sent out Glanmore Adam to win the Boyle Sports Derby ticket at the expense of Call Him Now owned by Kieran McManus from Martinstown.
