AN athlete’s ability to push themselves to the limit is created by the brain’s need to win, according to a scientific survey.

Dr Jo Corbett, from the University of Portsmouth, has found that the brain of an exhausted athlete can tap into the body’s anaerobic energy sources to fuel that final push for victory.

The senior lecturer in applied exercise physiology conducted a study to find out what triggers a cyclist to go faster when they are competing against someone head-to-head.
