Fantasy to make his mark

THERE will be loads of Derby chat in the air this evening at Shelbourne where the pre-racing trial session will see many top names going through their paces from the new 525 and 550 yards traps.

On trial duty will be Derby champion Tyrur McGuigan, perhaps runner-up Tyrur Big Mike, English Derby third Razldazl George, current Derby favourite Jayfkay and his litter brother Barack as well as Hegarty Open 600 winner Kingo and English Derby semi-finalist Melodys Royal.

The main race of the night is the 550 yards ECC Timber final and here the search for genuine Derby contenders will continue.

Fastest semi-final winner was Marie Gilbert's Short Grass with a narrow 29.79 win over Air Force Roxsy while the other semi saw Paul Hennessy's Colourful Fox get up late to beat Razldazl Rioga by two lengths in 29.85.

On known form we can expect Razldazl Rioga to make the running but he does struggle with the final 25 yards of this trip. However his presence could cause problems for both semi-final winners and this could well open a perfect opportunity for Des Kiely's Shaneboy Fantasy.

If there is a young dog out there with real Derby credentials then he could be that dog, but he must up the ante at the start of his races.

I have been a fan of this dog since his first outing in the Lee Strand at Tralee but in a couple of his races there he showed decent early pace. He has yet to make any semblance of a start at Shelbourne but this could be the night.

I would expect the strong-running Colourful Fox to run another big race and he won't be far away.

Mossie O'Connor's Deerfield Music has been handed a horrible trap five draw in the Ladbrokes' Derby Trial Stake and caution is advised. This could allow Pablo Supreme to reverse Tralee placings.

All seven first round heats of the Thurles Fresh Milk Tipperary Cup will be run at Thurles tonight and the battle of the round could be between Big Appetite and Millbankscarface in the opening heat. Bet of the evening could be Paul Hennessy's Tranquil Time which was an impressive winner of the St Leger Consolation last weekend.
