Heffernan seeking redemption in Cork

LAST year Robert Heffernan had to watch from the stands as his Irish international team-mate, Jamie Costin (West Waterford), claimed the title and the national 3,000m record at Cork City Sports so it is hardly surprising that the Togher man wants to return and reclaim the limelight at the CIT Track on July 2.

Heffernan, who was injured last year, went on to retain his national track title at Santry a couple of weeks later and then sprang two surprise fourths in the 20k and 50k walks at the European championships in Barcelona to establish his place among the potential medallists for next year’s Olympic Games.

London 2012 was foremost on his mind at Cork City Hall yesterday when he joined the organisers to launch the Irish athletics showpiece but he insisted that he wanted to put the record straight before his Cork fans.
