Killester maintain unbeaten league run

11890 Killester are the only unbeaten side in the NIVEA For MEN SuperLeague after a 93-81 win over UL Eagles at Clontarf on Saturday night.

Champions Killester led by a point at the end of the first quarter but some fine play from Jermaine Turner and the irrepressible Isaac Westbrooks had them nine ahead at half time and they never looked back thereafter. Coach Mark Keenan praised his side who are now favourites to retain both the SuperLeague title and their National Cup crown.

He said: The first quarter was even but our defence picked up in the second and we scored 29 points which gave us breathing space. The win means a lot, we’re keeping our unbeaten record and it’s good for us when we come up against them again and we know we can beat them.”

Bord Gáis Neptune, who lost to Eagles in the Cup a week earlier, returned to winning ways with a 92-78 victory over UCD Marian. The game was held up after Michael McGinn suffered an accidental knee to the head, but he is likely to be available for the Cork side’s next league game.

“I think what makes UCD a good side is when they are on a rhythm they can shoot the ball,” said Neptune coach Pat Price. “We set out to take them out of their rhythm and I felt our defence kept them off balance in the first half.

“We are just pleased to get back to winning ways. The play-off’s are our sole focus and when we met on Monday last we agreed our record was 0-0 and we are starting our season over. We had some great performances from across the court, including Ger Noonan, who had an incredible nine steals.”

DCU Saints made it four wins on the trot when they saw off Ulster Elks 103-85. The Saints were without the injured Mike Trimmer but welcomed rookie Eanna Rutherford into the squad and the youngster produced a fine display.

The big clash between Team Montenotte Hotel and UL in the IrishSport TV women’s SuperLeague resulted in a 58-55 victory for the Cork side after a thrilling game at Neptune Stadium yesterday.

Michelle Fahy, who now plays for the Limerick side, scored 16 points against her old club but that score was matched by Claire Rockall who maintained her excellent performances for TMH.

“It looked like the game was going away from us in the final stages but we showed great resilience to grind out the win,” Team Montenotte coach Mark Scannell, admitted. “Aine McKenna got a great steal and a lay-up and Claire Rockall made two free throws in the final moments to swing it in our favour. Michelle (Fahy) was exceptional and her battle with Marie Breen was worth the admission fee alone. It was a fantastic advert for the women’s game.”
