Sonia joins Ireland’s Youth Olympics management team

IRISH ATHLETICS legend Sonia O’Sullivan is set for an Olympic return – but not on the track.

Sonia joins Ireland’s Youth Olympics management team

O’Sullivan, who won a silver medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney, will be Deputy Chef de Mission of the Irish team competing at the European Youth Olympics in Tampere, Finland next month.

The Chef de Mission, Martin Burke believes the inclusion of the Cork woman in the management team would boost Ireland’s medal chances in Finland.

He said: “As a new member of the Olympic Council of Ireland, it allows Sonia to gain valuable management experience in seeing how sports, other than athletics, operate in a multi-disciplinary Olympic-style environment.”

The 40-strong squad includes the cream of Ireland’s young athletic talent in four sports – track & field, cycling, gymnastics and swimming. Ciara Mageean from Portaferry, who smashed O’Sullivan’s 22-year-old junior 800m record, Shane Quinn from Waterford (1,500m) and Adam Ingram from Belfast (800m) are Ireland’s chief medal hopes. The European Youth Olympics will be held from July 18-25.
