UCC celebrates a vintage sporting year

TEN UCC students will be honoured for their sporting achievements tonight as the Cork university celebrates one of their most successful sporting years in modern times.

As well as the ten individual award winners, several clubs will be recognised for claiming intervarsity and provincial titles in the most successful year for the college since the annual awards began in 1983 in a ceremony at Jury’s Hotel — soon to be re-named the Cork Hotel — on Western Road in Cork.

Intervarsity success was achieved by the ladies volleyball club — who went on to represent the Irish Universities at a British University Championships — and the ladies basketball club, while the badminton, kickboxing, men’s orienteering and ultimate frisbee clubs did likewise.
