O’Rourke eyes bright future as best of Irish ready to rumble
One hundred and forty boxers have already entered the Championships which O’Rourke reckons will be one of the best ever at the South Circular Road venue.
“I believe that some of the boxers competing at the National Stadium over the next few weeks are the future stars of Irish amateur boxing.”
Four boxers, John Murray, Shane McKeown, Stephen O’Reilly and Phelim Halligan reached last year’s finals. Murray was edged out by Shane Hickey in the 2006 decider while McKeown was beaten by Patrick Ward of the Galway Boxing Club.
O’Reilly lost a close light middleweight final to Donal Ward just under 12 months ago. However, O’Reilly has now stepped up to middleweight and will be looking to add an Irish 75Kg title to his CV.
Light heavyweight Phelim Halligan was beaten by Patrick Corcoran, also of the Galway Boxing Club, in the 2006 final.
Boxing will commence at 6.30pm this evening.
