UNIVERSITY of Limerick claimed college bragging rights over Munster rivals University College Cork with a clinical 2-0 victory in the tie of the ESB Women’s Irish Senior Cup first round at the Mardyke on Saturday.

The Limerick girls scored their second win over their UCC counterparts this season, which augurs well for the intervarsities in Belfast this weekend.

Ards had a comprehensive 4-1 win at Three Rock Rovers, while Pembroke Wanderers strolled to a 3-0 win over Portadown. The weekend’s biggest wins belonged to Railway Union, who hammered Lurgan 6-0, and Knock, who dispatched NI Civil Service 5-0.

Belfast Harlequins and Lisnagarvey recorded comfortable away wins over Catholic Institute and Genesis respectively. It was also a good weekend for the Dublin college sides as UCD survived were 3-1 winners at Ballymena and Trinity defeated Greenisland 2-0. Bandon also progressed after being granted a walkover by Cookstown.

In the men’s competition, Suttonians made light work of Weston in a 4-1 win, and North Down edged out Newry by the odd goal in three.
