MICK O’CALLAGHAN, sacked from his post as international rowing team manager, yesterday called on Ireland’s rowers to remain focused and face up to the challenge regardless of the political differences within the sport.

The larger-than-life Cork man, who has regularly been in charge of international teams for the past eight years, was removed from his post as Ireland team manager at a meeting of the new board of the Irish Amateur Rowing Union at the weekend.

And, speaking in the aftermath of his dismissal, he admitted that he had made some unpopular decisions during his time in charge and was now paying the price for that.
