Griffin begins cycling odyssey across Canada

FORMER Clare hurler, Tony Griffin, yesterday began a cycling odyssey across Canada and Ireland to raise more than €1 million for cancer research.

The Dalhousie University kinesiology student left Halifax, Nova Scotia shortly after dawn yesterday on the 7,000km trek.

Said Griffin: “To the sound of the bagpipes and following a short prayer, we dipped into the Pacific and set off for the East Coast. We were led by Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“The celebrations the night before were nothing short of amazing! Over 100 supporters turned out to raise funds & awareness for the cause!

He added: “I am unsure what to expect. After a very trying day logistically from a supply point of view, I am very much looking forward to being completely in charge of the consequences of my hours on the bike. I will dictate how far we get and ultimately progress rests on my shoulders.

“In many ways the night before we left felt like the night before the first round of the Munster Championship. I felt ready, I knew I have worked hard to be at this stage and yet this assuredness is tinged with anticipation. Am I ready to bike for 53 days at an average of 150km per day and fulfill the many social engagements along the way? Only time will tell. I may need to call on Eddie Macken and one of his prize mares to make it through the Rockys. Let’s hope I have enough horse power to do it myself.”
