Having been capped for Ireland on over 150 occasions (and for many of which she captained the side), won a Senior Cup medal with Cork Harlequins in 2000 and won an astonishing 12 consecutive Munster Senior League titles and 12 consecutive Munster Senior Cup medals with the club, she has now turned to her attention to helping ‘Quins win the Junior cup.

Today the Farmers Cross outfit will take on northern side Annadale II in the second round of the competition, having already thrashed UCC II in the first round 9-0.

Not many players have actually achieved a Senior and Junior Cup double – the great Mary Logue being one of the few – and the club are delighted with her decision as it has given huge impetus to their second senior team.

“Rachel is a very unselfish person and already has a lot on her plate, being a married woman with a busy career as marketing executive at the Castle Hotel in Macroom and as well as that she is the secretary of the club,” a spokesman said.

“On top of all that she has been one of the greatest players in the modern game in this country and now she has decided to give something back from all her years of experience and that is something which can only benefit the ‘Quins’ seconds.”

In other fixtures in the competition, Ashton II face a tough match against Glenanne from Dublin, while Cork Church of Ireland II have a difficult away tie against Belfast Harlequins II.

Today’s Junior Cup second round games: Old Alex II v Kilkenny; Kilkeel v Pegasus II; Ashton II v Glenanne; Ards II v Pembroke Wanderers II; Wexford v Catholic Institute; Hermes II v Newbridge; Cork Harlequins II v Annadale; Belfast Harlequins II v Cork C of I II; Armagh II v Banbridge; Lurgan II v Yeats County; Bray v Randalstown II; Genesis v Muckross; Railway Union II v Our Lady’s Terenure; Greenfields v Fermoy; Loreto II v Larne.
