ALISTAIR CRAGG has returned to Arkansas for treatment on his Achilles tendon following his mishap in the final of the 5,000m at the European track and field championships in Gothenburg.

He was forced to stop when he looked to have made a winning move three laps out. The plan had been to escape from the kickers in the race — the Spaniards in particular — three laps from the finish.

Everything had gone to plan until the left Achilles tendon, which had been troubling him for five weeks, gave way under the pressure.
