Only Montoya can stop me now, saysSchumacher
The Ferrari driver has ruled out McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen, even though the Finn is just seven points behind with races in the United States and Japan left.
Schumacher leads Williams-BMW’s Montoya by three points following his first win in six races in Italy last weekend. He said: “I really think it will get more intense between me and Montoya and that it will be decided between us.”
The German, who has won the title for the past three years, could be crowned champion with victory at Indianapolis on Sunday week as long as other results go his way.
Meanwhile, Jacques Villeneuve insists he will not take part in any race-off with F1 hopefuls, even though his future is on the line. The 1997 champion has rubbished the idea of competing in a Pop Idol-style contest with rivals for his BAR seat.
BAR team boss David Richards floated the idea of a shoot-out between younger drivers following last weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. The idea, formed after watching Jenson Button’s girlfriend competing in Fame Academy, is understood to have been specifically for young hopefuls although Villeneuve’s name became linked to the driver's annoyance.
Villeneuve admitted after equalling his season’s best finish with sixth place in Monza that he has had no offers of a drive adding Honda were pushing heavily for test driver Takuma Sato to replace him. But Formula One ringmaster Bernie Ecclestone is now reported to have become involved to ensure Villeneuve stays in the sport.
