Waterloo heroes return in triumph

FORMER Fine Gael T.D, Liam Burke and his co-owner, Mossie Barry, received a tremendous welcome when the arrived home in Cork on the Manchester flight yesterday afternoon with the Waterloo Cup, following their success in the prestigious coursing event at Altcar the previous day with their bitch Henrietta.

“I backed her and Cumor (whom he also had a share in) to win their respective quarters, and also had a good bet on her in the final” said a delighted Burke.

It’s been a great coursing season for Burke, but it could have been even better. “When Cool Blues won his trial stake at Loughrea he collided with the escape. In the Boylesport Derby he led nearly all the way against Judicial Castelu in the third round only to be beaten on a just up having slowed near the escape. Perhaps the Loughrea incident was still in his mind but had he won that course I fancy he would have won the Derby,” revealed Burke.
