Jennings tops in World Rowing Championships

Ireland's Sinead Jennings won her lightweight sculls semi-final at the World Rowing Championships in Banyoles in Spain yesterday.

Former title holder Jennigs was third with 500m to go. But she came through to make up more than two seconds and beat Finland’s Minna Nieminea by 0.34s, crossing the line in 7m 50.56s.

Germany's Nina Gaesler was fastest qualifier for the final, winning the other semi in 7m 49.34s from Britain’s Jo Hammond (7:50.15).

But Tim Harnedy lost out for a place in the men's lightweight sculls final, fading badly over the last 500m and finishing a distant fifth in 7m19.81s.

And in the light coxless pairs, Neil Casey and Derek Holland were beaten by Germany for the third and final qualifying slot in their semi, finishing fourth and 1 second down in 6:45.73s.
