Irish squash team on target

Ireland’s men stayed on target for a place in the main draw of next year, when they won the first of their 5/10 position playoffs at the European Squash Team Championships in Rennes yesterday.

In a close match against the Scots, the match, drawn 2-2, was decided on point countback the Irish winning 71-69.

Ireland’s Liam Kenney retired at 9-4 9-4 down against John White, the team result already decided. Martin Heath had beaten Ireland’s John Rooney 9-4 9-5 9-0 but Derek Ryan had already defeated Peter O’Hara 9-6 9-3 9-1 and Steve Richardson had beaten Martin Woods a telling 9-1 9-2 9-2.
