GRIEF-STRICKEN Michael Schumacher choked back the tears after triumphing in yesterday’s San Marino Grand Prix just hours after his mother had died following a long illness.

The German and brother Ralf, who finished fourth, both opted to compete after flying back to Cologne on the eve of the race for a final visit to their mother Elisabeth who lay in an induced coma in hospital.

The 55-year-old, who used to work in the canteen of the Kerpen cart track where the Schumacher's honed their racing skills as teenagers, died in the early hours of yesterday morning.
