Mantell the ace for clinical England
The Irish boys took the game to their English counterparts right from the off and Eugene Magee opened the scoring following a free-flowing move involving Tim Cockram and Mark Gleghorne down the left-hand side of the pitch.
In the 14th minute, the English forced two short corners and despite the initial corner being deflected by Aaron Mills, the follow-up corner was converted by Andy Watts.
Ireland went further behind when Richard Lane finished from a short corner in the 20th minute.
England were in the ascendancy and Gareth Lennox had to make a number of important saves prior to the half-time hooter.
However, the Irish lads dug deep and got back into the game in the second half.
In the 45th minute, Eugene Magee won a short corner, which was dispatched to the roof of the net by Timmy Cockram and two minutes later, the Irish captain, Ronan Gormley, converted a penalty stroke following a stick check in the English circle.
The English were reeling at this stage and the Irish lads upped the tempo and had two further good chances before England equalised through a penalty corner from Matt Daly. Immediately from the restart, the Irish team went down the other end of the pitch and Phelie Maguire finished off a sweeping movement which had torn the English defence to shreds.
Unfortunately, the lead was not held and the England equalised through Simon Mantell from a penalty corner in the 53rd minute.
Mantell went on to win the game for England with a strike from play directly after a clear-cut Irish opportunity in the 62nd minute and he wrapped up the win with a breakaway goal in the final seconds.
The Irish assistant coach, Andy Smyth, was disappointed with the outcome of the game, as the players deserved to get something from it, having so bravely taken the game to England for long periods.
He said the English were clinical in their execution of scoring situations at crucial times in the game.
