TALKING from 50 years worth of experience, Mick O’Dwyer had a word or two of advice for the Irish Examiner Junior Sports Stars in the Berkeley Court yesterday.

O’Dwyer, who joked that he followed the sheikhs out of Kildare and into Laois last autumn, implored the cream of Irish sporting future to look after their bodies and minds, and to realise their potential.

“I have been involved with sport at the highest level for 50 years so I know exactly what the pitfalls are for you,” O’Dwyer said. “And I am telling you now, if you avoid alcohol and drugs and all that stuff, I have no doubt you will get to the top. We live in a country with a very prevalent drink culture but you have just got an award that proves you are at the top in your field of sport at the present time.
