Ireland’s lightweight men’s quadruple scull team failed to qualify for the final of the world rowing championships in Spain yesterday after their first loss at the championships.

The team, consisting of Ken MacDonald, Dermot McColgan, Herbie Griffin and Brian Young, had finished fourth in Lucerne last month and they needed a first or second place finish to make the final. The German team led the field and the home advantage pushed Spain into second place, leaving Ireland in third, missing out by only three seconds.
