THE Cork County cricket team are heading into their first second-round game in the Royal Liver “with a degree of optimism” after their historic first victory in the competition last week.

The Mardyke-based outfit beat Ardmore of Derry on Friday last to record their first-ever cup victory and they have now qualified for the last 16 of the competition.

According to club secretary Donal Donovan, the main reason for their progression was the form of their South African star Bruce Koch, in his third year with the Cork side, who not only took three wickets for 22 runs, but also scored 63 not out in the home side’s innings.
