Jordan still undecided on driver

JORDAN have brushed aside a deadline set by Jos Verstappen and are still to decide who will drive for the Formula One team in the 2004 season.

Jordan still undecided on driver

The Dutch driver had wanted Jordan to decide whether they would give him a seat by 5pm yesterday.

"There are no plans for any announcements tonight other than a test report," a Jordan spokesman commented last night.

"And it is not Jordan policy to comment on possible drivers while any negotiations are taking place."

Earlier, Verstappen's backers had issued an ultimatum to Jordan to sign the 31-year-old , who would bring around £5m in much-needed sponsorship.

"Eddie Jordan knows who Jos Verstappen is and Jordan has been made aware of the support and wishes of Jos Verstappen's sponsors," said a statement from Dutch computer manufacturer Trust.

"We have been talking for some time now and we would like to have an answer."

Jordan are the only F1 team not to have finalised their line-up for the coming season, which starts in Melbourne on 7 March.

Meanwhile Jenson Button's preparations for the new Formula One season were given a boost yesterday when the Englishman broke the lap record in testing at Barcelona.

The Frome-born driver took his BAR development car to a best-ever lap of the Spanish track of one minute 14.588 seconds as he gears up for his fifth season in Formula One.

Button, who knocked over a second off the previous record, was encouraged by the performance of BAR's development car, which is being used as the team wait to unveil their 2004 machine.

He said: "Obviously, it's a great feeling to have broken the lap record, especially with so many of the top teams here. Over the last few tests, we have really been concentrating on testing the car for reliability, and yesterday was the first time we had tried to do a reasonable lap.

"Because of that, we are extremely encouraged with the time, as the data seems to tell us we are heading in the right direction although we won't really know until Melbourne.

"It has put a smile on everyone's face, which is very important in the build-up to the season."
