The world number 14 recorded the 50th competitive 147 in his second-round match against Mark Selby, the opening session of which ended with Gray leading 5-3.

Earlier, Jimmy White had been at the centre of attention as he retired from his contest against Ali Carter when trailing 7-0, citing illness as the reason.

The ‘Whirlwind’ was one of three seeds to fall on the day when the world’s top 16 entered the competition, the others being Doherty and Chris Small.

Doherty’s exit was the biggest surprise, the Dubliner losing 9-7 to Hicks who is currently enjoying a resurgence after a barren few years.
