Karakatta Hill captures Premier Cup

KARAKATTA HILL won the Premier Cup at Templetuohy yesterday, flooring by two lengths the odds laid on the Kevin Barry trained Musical Hill.

The winner is owned by James and Andrew Kelliher of Castleisland. Andrew trains this second season dog, whose success promoted him to fourth place in the Champion Stakes points table. Blueview Bill, which lost to Karakatta Hill in the semi-finals, is also guaranteed a place in the Powerstown line-up.

Horizon Prince brought the Derby ticket to Golden, Co Tipperary, when proving two lengths too fast for the Newry challenger, Smiling Declan, in the final.

Roscrea trainer Pat Lee sent out Pick The Best to credit the Essex-Ennistymon partnership of Ernie Gaskin and Murty McMahon with the Oaks qualifier. She held on for the decisive points by a fading neck against Tequila Sunshine, trained by Lester Power for Michael Quilter of Lixnaw, Co Kerry.

The Brennan Cup at Tubbercurry yesterday found a home in Co Wexford when Honest Mover, which Cathal McGee trains for Mrs Marguerite Furlong of Caim, proved too strong in the final for Volga River, trained by Barry Lynch for John and Joe Scully from Galway.

An all-Galway final to the Derby Trial Stake ended in victory for Brian and Shane Divilly’s Crafty Zero at the expense of the New Line Syndicate’s Coolratty Pirate.

Lils Girl, owned by Maurice McAnulty, Bessbrook, Co Armagh and Tom Brennan, Tubbercurry, proved best in the Oaks qualifier at the expense of Northwest Guest, the property of Helen Devlin and Michael Lynch.
