A major conference to commemorate 100 years of Irish radio is being held at University College Cork today. It is – as the organiser, Dr Finola Doyle O’Neill says – “both a celebration and a critical reflection on how radio has shaped—and continues to shape—Irish society and culture.”
The first voice heard on Irish radio 100 years ago was that of Séamus Hughes. He lived a life which mixed the ordinary with the extraordinary.
