Cian Boyle enjoys Munster success
He won the opening shots by 15m. Callanan followed with two great throws to lead by 40m. Boyle’s fourth only reached the double gates. Callanan didn’t take advantage, but he did much better with his next to extend his lead to 80m. Boyle replied with a poor bowl and beat the tip by just 20m to leave almost a bowl between them.
Boyle rallied with a brilliant seventh, but Callanan beat it by 80m. Boyle was almost a bowl down again when he beat that by just 20m. Neither player followed with a good shot and the lead was now even closer to a bowl.
Boyle played a great shot to sight before the forestry to clip Callanan’s lead to just three metres. He followed with a perfect bowl around the left wind and regained the lead by 40m. Another super shot past the forestry pushed his lead to 130m. Callanan played his reply to the left and missed that by 50m to fall a bowl behind. Boyle raised the tempo with three great throws in succession to push his lead to almost two bowls.
Dan O’Halloran had a comfortable win in the Munster veteran final at Castletownkenneigh on Monday against Kevin O’Donovan.
He edged the first two shots. He then played a brilliant third towards the bridge which put him a bowl in front. O’Donovan held him to a bowl in the next exchange. O’Halloran then got another massive bowl towards the old pub to go two bowls clear. He bowled strongly from there to Pyne’s corner where he led by three bowls.
Aileen Murphy beat Emma Hickey by a bowl in the Munster intermediate women’s final at the Clubhouse. Hickey led by 15m after six to the quarry cross. Murphy won her first lead with her seventh, but Hickey led again at Clonakilty cross. Murphy finally broke the deadlock with powerful display in the last quarter.
Tom O’Donovan was an impressive bowl of odds winner over Timmy McDonagh in the Munster U16 final at Templemichael. He took a big lead with a great fourth to the white wall. McDonagh closed the gap with a good bowl towards Sarsfield’s Court cross. His next was not as good though and O’Donovan pushed his lead to 70m.
O’Donovan got the better of two great shots to the green and then beat a super bowl from McDonagh towards the last bend. McDonagh hit back with a big shot past the bend. O’Donovan parried that challenge with an excellent bowl towards the line, which gave him a bowl of odds.
Maria Nagle stayed on track to retain her All-Ireland U16 title when she beat 2013 champion Katie Sexton by almost a bowl in the Munster final at the Clubhouse. They were level after five to the quarry cross. Sexton went almost a bowl clear with her next and held it to Clonakilty cross. Nagle cut the lead in the next three and led at O’Riordan’s. They were locked together till Nagle got a super shot from the garage.
Darragh Dempsey beat Brian O’Driscoll is Munster U12 final at Timoleague. He had almost a bowl after five. O’Driscoll closed the gap on the decline, but Dempsey put it beyond doubt with a brilliant bowl at the monument.
Aidan Murphy beat Edmond Sexton in the last shot in the Mick Barry Cup at Ballincurrig, Brian Wilmot was off the pace in third place.
Sexton opened with a massive bowl to sight, but Murphy snatched the lead with a brilliant third to the creamery. Sexton and Murphy were level at the no-play line, with Wilmot a bowl behind. Sexton pushed clear to O’Riordan’s. Murphy turned the score with a brilliant bowl to the top of the long straight and was a bowl clear at the big corner.
Murphy and Sexton contested that lead to the end of the sycamores. Sexton then got a sensational second last to sight. Murphy missed sight, but he beat Sexton’s tip by 30m with his next. Both were right with their last shots, but Murphy edged it.
PJ Cooney beat Trevor O’Meara in the Jim O’Driscoll Cup. They were level after six to the no-play line. O’Meara pushed clear with a great bowl to sight at O’Riordan’s. Cooney levelled with a brilliant bowl to the big corner and was just short of the line in four more to win by a bowl. Wayne Callanan beat Seán Murphy by a few metres in a terrific joust in the same competition.
James O’Donovan erased the disappointment of his Munster semi-final defeat with two wins. On the road he beat Christy Mullins at Drinagh and in politics he was elected Chair of Bandon and Kinsale Municipal District.
Connie Connolly defied the odds to beat Noel O’Regan with a spectacular last shot in their resumed West Cork Novice I final at Bantry.
