Kingpin Kearney finally fulfils ambition

Niall Kearney, the 26-year-old European Challenge Tour player from Royal Dublin, achieved an ambition he has chased since turning professional in 2009 when he birdied the 18th hole at Adare Manor yesterday to capture the 104th Irish Professional Championship.

Kearney shot a closing round of three under par 66 for an eight under total of 268 to claim the first prize of €3,500 in an event sponsored by the Down Syndrome Centre, one stroke ahead of the holder, Michael McGeady from Donegal.

Kearney capped a glittering amateur career with victory in the 2008 South of Ireland Championship before turning professional the following year.
