With a limited playing pool to compete with, choosing rugby was always the sensible choice for a big young fella with a few balls in the air. But after the IRFU’s protectionist announcements this week, the shortest cut to a career in professional sport becomes even more attractive.

Or does it? Just as we wanted to keep the best jobs for ourselves in boom times, we eventually discovered that the wider European picture might soon leave us with no jobs at all.
