Brian Gavin: Barrett red the right call but Ennis epic almost impossible to referee

Some of what went on off the ball was ridiculous and both Clare and Cork have to take responsibility for a lot of it.

Last week, the county secretaries received an email from Croke Park underlining that any contact around the head area in either Gaelic football or hurling would result in a dismissal.

Teams can’t say they weren’t warned and on that basis Shane Barrett had to be sent off for his foul on David Reidy in Ennis. But it was one of just a catalogue of incidents that made an epic game almost impossible to referee.
