Charlie Smyth's remarkable journey from Down goalkeeper to NFL kicker is set to be completed after the 24-year-old was elevated to the active roster to make his New Orleans regular season debut.Â
The 24-year-old who launched his unlikely bid to cross codes less than two years ago had been involved in a battle for the starting kicker's job after the struggling Saints had released first-choice specialist Blake Grupe last week. After Saturday evening's roster moves, it is clear that Smyth was victorious over fellow contender, veteran Cade York.Â
