She adds that her aunt’s home, in a part of the city once lined with market gardens, was “a small-but-mighty hub of homegrown abundance — cabbages, carrots, rhubarb, strawberries, onions — grown, dried, and stored right on site”.

These days, the gardens at No 4 are paved for easy maintenance, but new owners might favour a return to its edible past.

Ms McLoughlin says the property, which she is guiding at €375,000, represents a terrific opportunity for a young buyer eager to put their stamp on it, and to settle in a solid neighbourhood.

Whoever buys will have big shoes to fill. The final word goes to the late owner’s niece: “Its owner was much like the house itself: compact, strong, full of spirit, and never afraid of a bit of flair.
