“The house was always full of good food, an open-door welcome, and a ‘one call and we’re there’ kind of generosity,” says the niece. She adds that her aunt’s home, in a part of the city once lined with market gardens, was “a small-but-mighty hub of homegrown abundance — cabbages, carrots, rhubarb, strawberries, onions — grown, dried, and stored right on site”.

These days, the gardens at No 4 are paved for easy maintenance, but new owners might favour a return to its edible past.

There’s ample ground to do so and a south-facing rear aspect means growing conditions are promising.

Inside, some layout changes are likely, notably relocating the downstairs bathroom which is directly off the living room. 

Both the kitchen and upstairs bathroom would benefit from an upgrade; the latter features an old-fashioned, raised bathtub, approached by two carpeted steps.

Áine McLoughlin of AML Property Services says there are “quite a number of young buyers looking at the house”, attracted by the possibility of financial aid to support renovations, as it has been vacant for a few years, and may qualify for the vacant property grant, worth up to €50,000.

An obvious draw is the location — a quiet cul-de-sac off Pouladuff Road, within an easy stroll of UCC, 25 minutes on foot to Cork city centre, and a five-minute walk to The Lough nature reserve.

“A big attraction is accessibility to everywhere from this location,” says Ms McLoughlin. “You can hit the South Link road in no time, but you can also walk everywhere, and that’s becoming more important for people as traffic levels continue to rise in the city.”

No 4 is a semi-d, with a side laneway that could be used for parking.

 A garage at the end of the laneway is suitable for storage or as a workshop.

Ms McLoughlin says the property, which she is guiding at €375,000, represents a terrific opportunity for a young buyer eager to put their stamp on it, and to settle in a solid neighbourhood.

Whoever buys will have big shoes to fill. The final word goes to the late owner’s niece: “Its owner was much like the house itself: compact, strong, full of spirit, and never afraid of a bit of flair. You can feel that energy in every corner. It’s a home built on joy, neighbourliness, and a legacy that still lingers warmly in the walls.”
