It’s not just because the exterior of their strikingly stylish home at 4 Cnoc An Óir in Waterford is white that the owners called it Teach Bán – it’s also because their surname happens to be White.

Built in 2021 on a serviced site in a small development off Williamston Road – Teach Bán is a highly distinctive and highly energy efficient four-bed architect designed house with a guide of €895,000.

What makes the property stand out from other large contemporary homes is the fact that it’s been built with a symmetrical twin gable design From the back it’s even more striking than from the front, because here the architect has slotted in an overhanging zinc clad cantilever boxed bathroom between the gable sections.

Interestingly, the symmetrical gables started out as being a solution to a problem rather than a design choice for the Whites.

“We wanted a two storey house but because of planning requirements it had to be one and a half storey – so our architect Michael Tobin suggested this,’’ says the owner.

After buying the site – one of five in the development, they went to the architect with a list of requirements for the ultra-contemporary property they wanted to build.

“We asked for open plan living with a separate living area connected by pocket doors and or a fourth bedroom on the ground floor” he reveals.

When working out the layout of the upper floor the architect suggested the zinc clad bathroom which they immediately loved. The most difficult decision after that was choosing a staircase for their ultra-modern home.

“We did a lot of research on staircases because we wanted to get it right. We decided that a solid timber staircase would be too obstructive in the open plan living area so we chose a steel spined oak tread staircase with glass balustrades,’’ reveals the owner.

As per the couple’s request – the house has an extensive ground floor living area connected by pocket doors which can be opened to create better space for entertaining.

The kitchen /dining /living area, fitted with off white units and a substantial quartz topped blue island, extends to almost the full width of the property at the rear.

At the front there’s a living room with an insert stove as well as a room which is used as a study but could be a fourth bedroom. A guest WC and a utility room completes the ground floor accommodation.

The stylish minimalist staircase leads to an upper floor where, in addition to the zinc clad bathroom, there are three bedrooms including two with en suites. One side of the upper floor is taken up by an extra spacious master bedroom which has a well-equipped walk in wardrobe as well as an en suite.

To ensure privacy, the owners built two and a half metres high walls around Teach Ban’s large gardens and fitted electric gates. The landscaped gardens are as modern and well thought out as the interior rooms with parking at the front, a large decked area at the side and lawns at the rear.

Describing it as a luxurious and sophisticated home, REMAX auctioneers say this house has been designed for an exceptional lifestyle.

“It’s one of the most amazing properties to come on the market in Waterford in recent times,’’ says auctioneer John Fogarty who has shown it to returning emigrants, hospital consultants and to some Dublin buyers who have the flexibility to work from home and want to move to the Southeast.

“The location on Williamstown Road, often called Millionaires Row – within walking distance of Waterford Hospital and a short drive from the city centre, is very sought after,” he adds.

VERDICT: Stylish enough to be written about in property magazines.
