GARDEN Q&A: My calla lilies will not flower
When they produce leaf after leaf but no flower, it usually means they’ve plenty of food and energy but no incentive to bloom.
My calla lilies have not flowered for three years. Beautiful, healthy leaves, but alas, not a flower. Have you a solution?
First, check they’re not in too much shade, they need good light to flower well. If they are in a good, open and sunny position then it sounds like your calla lilies are too comfortable.
When they produce leaf after leaf but no flower, it usually means they’ve plenty of food and energy but no incentive to bloom. Try giving them a bit of “tough love”, ease back on high-nitrogen feeds, as these encourage lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
A tomato food, high in potash, will encourage them to produce flowers. Finally, consider lifting and dividing congested clumps in late winter. Rejuvenating a clump like this can often spark flowers. With the right balance of light, feed, and space, you’ll be rewarded with those beautiful blooms before too long.
