Garden Digest: Events to help you enjoy your green spaces

  • A Snowdrop garden open day in aid of the Cork University Hospital charity takes place at Bride Park Cottage in Killumney, Co Cork, P31 VW52, on Sunday, February 18, from 11am to 5pm. Entry is €10. Tea/coffee and light refreshments will be served.
  • Ladysbridge & District Flower & Garden Club hosts Dominic Cullinane of Curraghbeg Nursery, Ovens, on Monday, February 19, in the Garryvoe Hotel at 8pm. Dominic will have plants for sale on the night. All welcome. Non-members €10.
  • Cork Flower Club holds its first meeting of 2024 on Tuesday, February 20, at 7.30pm in its new venue, Douglas GAA Club, Douglas West. Nora Gallagher AOIFA will be giving a demonstration titled "Naturalist Spring". All welcome. Visitors €10.
  • A lecture by Ben Preston, Cliff Bank Nursery and former head gardener at York Gate Garden near Leeds, titled “York Gate Through The Seasons” takes place on Thursday, February 22, at 8pm at Northridge House, St Luke’s Castle Road, Mahon, Cork T12 H970. All welcome. Visitors €10.
  • The Owenabue Garden and Flower Club will host a horticulture talk by Tanguy de ToulgoĂ«t, Dunmore Country School, Durrow, titled "Sustainable Gardening for All". The event includes horticulture and decorative competitions plus a sales table. It takes place on Monday, February 26 at 8pm in St. Mary’s NS, Waterpark, Carrigaline. All are welcome. Visitors €7.
  • Mallow Flower & Garden Club is hosting a floral demonstration titled "Naturalistic Spring" by Nora Gallagher at Mallow College of Further Education on Tuesday, February 27, at 7.30 pm. All welcome. Non-members €8.
  • In Carlow, February is snowdrop month. An extensive snowdrop collection is available to view in Shankill Castle each weekend in February and the gardens at Burtown House will open every Wednesday to Sunday during the month.
  • The Grow It Yourself (GIY) organisation is running a course on polytunnel growing on February 18 delivered by head grower Richard Mee; €80, visit www.giy.ie for details.
  • The Cork Alpine Hardy Plant Society will host a lecture on Thursday, March 28, at 8pm by Jenny Wainwright-Klein, head gardener at The Schachen Garden in Germany. The talk is titled: “Growing Alpines in the Schachen Alpine Garden: A Satellite Garden of the Munich Botanic Garden in the Bavarian Alps”. The talk takes place at Northridge House, St Luke’s Castle Road, Mahon, Cork, T12H970. Visitors €10.
