Home to cousins Somerville and Ross, writers of the Irish RM books, this lovely little village had put up a strong resistance to new development.
Recently, however, and on the second go, Fleming Construction passed through the planning process with a low density scheme on a seven acre site at the top of the village called The Lawn.
Twenty of a total of 43 units are already booked and joint agents for the scheme are Pat Maguire of SWS Property Service and Niall Cahalane of Cahalane Skuse.
Twelve of the houses are now at roof level and new owners can look forward to moving in by June next, says Niall Cahalane.
As the historic village is just an hour’s drive from Cork city, there has been the expected uptake from that quarter and the scheme should have a mix of permanent and second-home buyers, says Pat Maguire.
Designed by architect Roddy Hogan to follow a village-style streetscape, access to the new scheme will be at the top of the village to ease congestion.
A new pedestrian route will link The Lawn to Cross Street almost at the point where an old tree famously divides the roadway.
The development’s sideline position behind the main street shouldn’t affect the aesthetics of the existing buildings especially as Castletownshends last big expansion was in the 17th and 18th centuries and it’s architectural gems is the 17th century Castletownshend Castle.
Prices start at €195,000 for the smaller, two-bed units rising to 500,000 for the all ensuite, four-bed at 2,800 square feet.
Also in the area, a detached, four-bedroomed farmhouse is up for grabs at €295,000.
Quaint and utterly charming, according to Aidan Murphy of Town and Country properties, this renovated property is set about two miles outside the village, on the main Skibbereen road and comes in perfect condition, he adds.
Part of the attraction of this house at Gortbrac are the old sash windows which have been restored.
Also, a modern sunroom has been added to the front and a new living room wing takes up the right hand wing of the farmhouse.
There is great space here, from the sunroom, which is 25 feet in length to the sitting room, the living room and the fully fitted modern kitchen and utility.
The ground floor also has a double bedroom and a bathroom, with three bedrooms, one of which is ensuite, on the upper floor.
