Ronan gets Oscar nomination - Well done Saoirse
It is not so very long ago since Saoirse Ronan was recognised as an acting prodigy.
The hopes inherent in that tag — so many things can and do go wrong for young, very gifted artists — is no longer applicable as yesterday’s Oscar nominations confirmed.
Ronan, at the age of just 25, has received her fourth nomination, this time as best actress for her performance as Jo March in Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of Little Women.
This, by any standard in any field is exceptional. Such achievement inevitably brings comparisons with the greats in whatever field is relevant.
Therefore, it seems reasonable, even at this comparatively early stage in her career to point out that Ronan has another 45 years to match the 21 nominations received by the wonderful, once-in-a-generation Meryl Streep between 1979 and 2018.
Ronan faces very stiff competition so between now and Oscars night — February 9 — we can bask in her reflected glory as well as enjoy her radiant, all-cheering talent.
Good on ya, Saoirse.
