Airbnb rules sidelined

It is typically Irish, in the most cutting sense of that phrase, that local authorities have not been given extra funding to police laws designed to limit the impact that Airbnb lettings are having on housing markets.

The laws were designed to strike a balance between generating some income from a property and ensuring that tourists do not price local people struggling to find a home out of a strained market.

Uncontrolled Airbnb lets are recognised as a contributory factor in the escalating housing crisis hence limiting legislation.

This, yet again, begs the obvious question: Why enact legislation only to make it irrelevant by imagining it will be self-policing?

Not only does that, in this instance, discredit our parliament and local authorities but it exacerbates the housing crisis.

Not only does this underline the role that almost sacred property rights have in the housing crisis, but it shows again how very uncomfortable this Government is with even the suggestion that they must be at least policed if not curtailed if the common good is to prevail.
