Even though it has provided high drama and, for a while at least, a perverse entertainment, in the grand, centuries-long scheme of things, Brexit matters little enough.

It has, though, allowed one stereotype to sneer and snarl at another. It has indulged a type of English nationalist, fuelling their proclivity to present themselves as frustrated Gullivers tied down by Lilliputian EU red tape and “unelected” bureaucrats.
