Protests challenge democracy with mob rule of any kind a toxic threat
Stable, sensible democracies understand that protest is part of political engagement and expression.
Protest may not always be welcome — as French President Emmanuel Macron has discovered — but it is better than the pressure-cooker alternative. Stable, sensible citizens who wish to exercise this privilege, and in today’s strongmans’ world it would be naive to imagine it a guaranteed right, usually understand the difference between licence and latitude.
