The Vatican mandarins who, presumably with some Irish input, planned this month’s flying visit — around 36 hours — by Pope Francis have a deep understanding of protocol, of what is unavoidable and what is to be avoided.

To suggest otherwise is to pretend that one of the world’s most experienced, culturally aware, and politically alert civil services is cack-handed, asleep at the lectern, or indifferent to its obligations.
