LAST night’s torrid 5,000-metre race in the cauldron of the Olympic stadium in Athens was the closing chapter of a magnificent era for Sonia O’Sullivan, undoubtedly the greatest Irish female athlete of all time.

While not expected to retire from the track until after next year’s European Championships, it is the end of the Olympic road for the Cobh runner who achieved so much and has been a fine sporting ambassador for Ireland.

The spring may no longer be in the legs but the heart is as strong as ever.
