A report published yesterday about the country's waste management makes for depressing reading because, among other things, it predicts a serious threat to Ireland's competitiveness and suitability as a location for international inward investment.

Written by economist and consultant Peter Bacon, the report was commissioned by Celtic Waste Limited, a major company in waste management systems.

Although he considers that the Regional Waste Management Strategies represent a significant move forward for waste management planning, they have seriously underestimated the growth of waste arising in Ireland.
